Auld Lang Syne

Tops (Two for One)

Not only were the Rolling Stones recently named the top touring band of this decade, this live performance from 2006 was also my favorite video of the past year on this blog (I think I may have posted it once or twice).
It definitely has it all. Great video...great audio...great rendition of an R & B classic!

Best T.V. of the 'OOs

I am not a huge fan of television, but the following are some of the shows that I watched off and on during the last decade. It is a "no brainer" that I do not need to include clips of The Simpsons or Family Guy. They are the best of "ever".

Good Knight

A Few Thoughts...

Far too many things went wrong in an eleven year old girl's life that led up to the tragedy that has embraced this community over the last several days. The tragedy did not just start on Tuesday evening. In my opinion, it started years ago.
Without passing judgment and without knowing why this young girl was not residing with her biological parents(which ultimately put her in harm's way), I can only give you my personal observations and experiences on children from broken homes.
When two people decide to have children, you not only give up one half of your DNA, you also give up one half of your life. Regardless of your marital circumstance, that child must always take priority. You do everything humanly possible to insure that your child is safe from harm, even if it means that you go without. Your job, that new car or even dating must never take precedence.
Remember one thing. Your child did not ask to be born. You are the one that did the asking. As a parent, you are entrusted with that lifelong responsibility.

(Twirling,Twirling,Twirling Towards) Freedom!!!

I am getting a big kick out of this "Best Local Blog" contest over at Michael's Monoblogue blog. Right now my daughter's blog is ahead. I have been beating the bushes for votes because...well, because she is the joy of my life and because...I can.
One other reason is that she has a God given knack for writing and I would love to see her explore the possibilities of this talent.
So, if you are reading this, go to and vote for Twirling...Towards Freedom(once per hour are the rules). And while you are there, read what Michael has to say. He also has that same God given talent.

I could not find a video of the actual artist performing this great song, so I had to go with(what I thought was) the best cover.

Oh, Rat Farts!

Hopefully, the "Blizzard of '09" will hold off for several more hours so I can at least participate in the "family" Christmas(and my birthday) festivities. I don't think the heavy stuff is going to come down for a few more hours. If events are canceled, well...Oh, rat farts!

Black Crowes

I love the line in this song that goes...

"Mommy's alright. Daddy's alright. They just seem a little weird"!

I can imagine my daughter saying this line to her boyfriend(s) before introducing him to her parents. I know for a fact that she once used the disclaimer: "Now you know why I am like I am".

You're alright, honey. You just seem a little weird!

Power To The People, Right On!

It appears that the pressure put on Salisbury's Chief of Police by it's fed up populace was just too much. He will take an extended medical(surgery)leave and will formally retire on June 30,2010.
I have nothing bad to say about the man, as I do not know him. All I can say is that I do not envy his successor.

THE MAN - Live

Turn Away From It All Like A Blind Man

Gimme a break! ABBA is being inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame and such artists as KISS, The Cars, Boston, Chicago and Cheap Trick are passed over again.
ABBA is not Rock 'n Roll. ABBA is pap and circumstance. My favorite passover is a band that I saw in the early 1970s, when Southern Rock was in it's heyday. There is even a website and petition drive to rectify this obvious snub.

Gimme a break! ABBA couldn't even hold Toy Caldwell's jockstrap!

Tis The Season!

Is It In You?

Pepsico and it's subsidiary, Gatorade, have decided to drop Tiger Woods from any future ads. The cola giant claims poor sales for their decision and not the recent bad press of Gatorade's sports spokesman. Maybe they could keep Tiger and change the tagline, "Is it in you?".

The following is a brief history of how Gatorade came to be. One little known fact is that Florida State doctors also planned to work on a replenishment drink and came up with the name "Seminole Fluid", but that idea dried up quickly.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

8-Track Treasures (Spyro Gyra)

This group has been around since the mid-seventies. I think my friend,"Hollywood", turned me on to them with the album "Carnaval"(the bird on the cover looks familiar).

The King of Soul

On this day in 1967, Otis Redding and several members of his backing band, the Barkays, died in a plane crash in Wisconsin. I remember hearing the news while listening to WKBW. I imagine that the tragic news was followed by Redding's biggest hit song.

His biggest hit, which was written three days before his death and released on Jan.10 of the next year, was never really finished. Redding whistled the final verse, intending to compose lyrics at a later date.

The Polls Are Closed. And The Winner Is...

Michael at Monoblogue blog is running another poll to ask readers to vote for the "Best Blog in Salisbury". My blog was randomly selected for voting in the first of three rounds, along with SBYNEWS and Progressive Delmarva. My blog was leading or tied for the lead from the polls inception. Last night, before I turned off the computer, afterthegoldrush was ahead by 4 votes. When I turned on the computer early this morning (I now know how Thomas E. Dewey must have felt in 1948)the poll had closed and I had lost by 5 votes (a 9 vote swing in 9 hours?). I was not devastated, as my blog had no business being in the running in the first place. My blog is just a hobby that I started a couple years ago to amuse myself. The best reward to come out of my venture is that I have met a lot of great people. People that I never would have met if I had not started typing in August of 2007. I plan to keep on blogging and to keep on meeting as many people as possible as long as possible. I would like to thank the 22 people(or the person that voted 22 times) for their vote of confidence. Oh yeah, the winner was SBYNEWS.

Worst Officiating Ever!

The NFL is going straight to Hell!
They will do anything in their quest for the almighty do$$ar!
After all, they are the "Bitch" of the television networks!
The Redskins outplayed the "vaunted" Saints and should have beat them in regulation if not for the ineptitude of the home team's kicker.
The worst part was how the officials could not get anything right. They "blew" two calls that should have gone to the Redskins. They tried to add 6 seconds to the play clock in favor of the Saints and once did not know which team called a time out.
In my opinion, the officials were not inept, they were exacting. They had their instructions to err in favor of the 11-0 Saints. Call me crazy, but what better scenario for Super Bowl XLIV and ad revenue than to have two unbeaten teams.
After all, they are the "Bitch" of the television networks!

Watch the OVERTIME part of the play from 4:55 to 5:20. I guess the officials do not consider the forearm as part of the body. Not down by contact, my butt!

I <3 Me Some Screamin' Guitar!

You would think that with today's technology, they could make one that goes to 12.

It's Official (32-13)

Blast From The Past (The Easybeats)

You hear the old standards from the Stones and The Beatles on the radio, but when was the last time that you heard this song by The Easybeats. Hit play and say today.

Four Score and Ten...

My Mom turned 90 years old today. When I presented her with a box of Whitman Samplers, her only reply was..."Boy, that's old".
She really has lived a long life.
She graduated from GW with honors(Phi Beta Kappa).
She worked at the Washington Post.
She spent 14 years as a social worker(and went into houses that the police would not enter, unless fully armed).
And, she has put up with me for almost 55 years.
I am lucky to still have her around.

Headphones Required

I tried to find a good live version of Billy Squier performing this song, but I was unsuccessful.

My motto has always been: Audio first...Video second.

Play it loud!

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Rumor has it that this song became a big hit due to the fact that D.J.s liked to play it because the length of it was perfect for a cigarette break.

I'm Sick and Tired...Of Being Sick and Tired!

I am sick and tired of what has become of Salisbury, Maryland!

Are the thugs so brazen that they leave notes in advance of their crimes?
Is the media so dumb that they reveal a crime fighting tool used by a local business?
Is the local police department inept, uninterested or scared?

Something has to change!

I Do Recipes Too!

"Fancy Flea Fricasse"
1-Large cat(flea bitten)
1-Flea collar
1-Large pot
1-Jug of oil
1-Piece of string(10" or longer)
1-Mason jar and lid

Heat oil in large pot to a boil.Tie string to flea collar and place around cat's neck.
Place cat, butt down, into hot oil(be careful that cat doesn't scratch). When fleas reach flea collar, they will walk up string and into mason jar. Close lid and discard.
Serve cat with green beans.

(Additional info: Cat #1 is preferable to Cat #2)

I'm (Not) Tiger Woods

Let me start out by saying that I have never been the type of person that is fascinated with the "Celebrity Type". I have never had a "Hero" in my life outside of
people that actually touched my life. When I was a youngster, I had visions of becoming either a Reverend in the Episcopal Church(Hero:The Rev.Dr.Dyer)or a physician(Hero:Dr.Annand). Both were just regular people who put their pants on one leg at a time.
I think that this whole Tiger Woods situation is similar to Watergate. If Nixon had just told the truth from the "get go" and not tried to cover it up, it would have blown over rather quickly.
Here is my take on "Woodsgate".

Tiger was messing around on his wife.
She found out about it and was pissed.
She gave him and his Escalade "what for" with the business end of a 4 iron.
He tried to cover up the injuries by staging an accident(under the cover of night).

If it was me, I would have kept my dirty laundry in the house and said that I could not attend this week's tournament due to the flu.

But then again...I'm not Tiger Woods.

14 Fans ( Plus One )

I just got home from seeing Roy Book Binder at the Globe Theatre. The crowd was very small; fourteen fans and me.
A Roy Book Binder show is a blend of finger-pickin' blues and blues (history) banter.
After the show, the artist came off the stage and even visited with each member of the audience.
Here are several of the songs that we were treated to. By the way, just make that 15 fans.

The Book on Davis

Now that I got the date correct for the Roy Book Binder Show this Sunday at the Globe in Berlin, I figured that I needed to do some homework on the man.
After a bit of research, my feelings about Sunday are the following.

I will feel like someone standing on the bank of a brook watching a paper boat (that was launched upstream many, many years ago) pass by.

My Online Health Assessment

I just completed my health assessment for my annual enrollment in my employee health insurance. By just taking this 15 minute survey, I will realize a significant savings
in my premium (however, I will still be paying more per pay as health costs continue to rise).
The good news is that my score was 85, compared to an average of 77 for my peers.
I scored highest(good)on STRESS, DEPRESSION, ALCOHOL USAGE and DRUG ABUSE(They called me a poster child-Hey, why do you think they call it dope?).
My lowest scores(bad)were my SMOKING, SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE (Obviously, they know nothing about the company that they cover) and EATING HABITS(maybe my daughter, the nutritionist, can correct this).
If I can correct my lower scores and continue the path that I have chosen that raised my higher scores, I may live to be 90 also.

Here is to FAITH:

I get most of my videos from YouTube and sometimes read the comments that people post.
Some of the banter is pretty funny. You would have to check out the comments for this vid to catch my drift.
"Knickerless on stage" that's a classic!!!

Gin Blossoms

"Some guy" from another blog put the following video (of his own music) up and I immediately thought...Gin Blossoms. Have a listen. It is a pretty good song.

The Gin Blossoms are underrated in my humble opinion.

I Would Never Make It As A Wedding D.J.

There is no way that I could listen to the garbage that is the staple. I would be more inclined to play such songs as the following.

If I ever did get married again, I bet that I could book this band for roughly the same price as a wedding D.J. And this time around, there will be alcohol served.

Sugarmag's Random Thoughts: Does Freedom of Expression Apply to 5 Year Olds?

The day our freedom died...

Smile. Look At The Year That I Have Had.

I have always claimed that odd numbered years were lucky for me. I know that this is just happenstance that every other year has been good to me. I am not worried that 2010 will be unlucky or bad for me. Whatever happens will happen. Whatever I can do to make the right decisions, I will do. I have learned that I will not sweat the things that I can not control.
2009 started out just like 2008. I grounded myself from leaving the house with the shackles of alcohol. Why? I have no idea. Earlier this year, I removed the stress from the outside world and I no longer needed that crutch.
The fact that I was seeing clearly for the first time in years led to the revelation that this world really was made up of good and evil. Evil wanted me back. But in the end, God won out.
Going forward, I will never walk alone.

Shine (that) Light Again.

I have posted this video several times. The clarity of the audio/visual is stunning. It also far surpasses the album version of this song.
The Stones were definitely "on" that night.
This song could be taken in more than one way. "Mick" could be singing as a guy who has developed an infatuation for a girl that does not know that he (even) exists.
Or, he could singing as a guy who a girl has developed preconceived notions about and thinks that he is "playing a role".
And... "She doesn't (even) fuckin' know me!".

Stone Cold Favorite

Back to this Rolling Stones tag theme. I guess that my favorite album would have to be Sticky Fingers(1971). The actual cover was one of a kind in it's own right. It featured a real workable zipper. So much for leaving to the imagination the thought behind the album's name. There is not one song on this album that I do not like. I can not say that for most of my favorites.
The following song is not from Sticky Fingers. I can post "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" anytime. The following video is from my two favorite R&R bands ever and together. Enjoy!

Favorite Stones' Song of All-time

Not much going on at the moment, thus the lack of written posts. I guess that no news is good news, or my life is in a rut. I do what I can to stay on the upper ridge. Last night, I went to Flavors on Main St. to hear my friend (in Christ), Pete and his band play. They are damn good. Three awesome guitar players and a drummer that kicks ass. Last night, in addition to a trumpeter and a saxophonist, Flavors had a bouncer/ doorman. If you have ever been to this restaurant/bar, you would know that this would be the equivalent of employing an armed guard to protect your $32.64 of copper in your piggy bank. His main job was to keep the patrons from leaving the bar with alcohol in their hands(o.k. if it is in your bloodstream). He also was there to keep one patron(me) from entering the bar with a non-alcoholic brew. In fact, after awhile, he said that I could not even be standing on the sidewalk drinking a Busch N/A. He was a real typical bouncer/doorman...a dickhead. Thursday night, I will be going to hear Roy Bookbinder with Tim, Critter(wife and bro) and a friend. Got to stay on the upper ridge. The following video has got to be one of the best versions of my favorite Rolling Stones' song. If you can find a better one, then post it. Hey look...I wrote something!

Slightly Different...oh, yeah!

Maybe You Can Take It With You

I was talking to an old friend last night (who happens to be a life insurance salesman).
Some people consider insurance to be a form of gambling. This is a false assumption. When you gamble, you can finish in one of three places: a winner, a loser or you can break even. Of course, you can choose not to play.
I figure that when I die, my body will be cremated and placed next to my sister in the plot at Parson's. A couple grand outta do it.
Not my old friend. He has made elaborate plans. He has in place four plots. One for his wife and three for him and his Corvette. He has instructed Sam at Holloway's to embalm him in a sitting position with his hands outstretched at 10 and 2.
Me, being me, had only one question: "What will be in your tape deck?".

His answer...
